Stop Sexy Cheerleading!

Well, we talk here about sex education, here's a story about sex and education ... I guess.

Down in Texas, one legislator has decided that some of the cheerleaders have just a little too much goin' on, if ya know what I mean.
Legislation filed by Rep. Al Edwards would put an end to "sexually suggestive" performances at athletic events and other extracurricular competitions.

"It's just too sexually oriented, you know, the way they're shaking their behinds and going on, breaking it down," said Edwards, a 26-year veteran of the Texas House. "And then we say to them, 'don't get involved in sex unless it's marriage or love, it's dangerous out there' and yet the teachers and directors are helping them go through those kind of gyrations." Texas Lawmaker Wants End to 'Sexy Cheerleading'

Mmm, yeah, now that's something we needed a new law for. Sexy cheerleading. The world would be a better place without that. Yeah, really.

You just cant stand to win can you?

You have embraced a noble cause of keeping the brainwashed Christian Fundamentalist from cramming their fairly tale version of the origins of the human species out of the Public School curriculum, but no that wasn't good enough was it?

No, now you're scaring your own side with your brand of extremism.

Be it right or wrong, most straight parents do not want homosexuality presented to their children as being "normal" behavior. And I am not talking about Fundamental Christian parents, I am talking about 95% of all parents.

What you are attempting to do here is cram your extreme ideology down their children's throat, while all the time complaining that is what they are trying to do to your Children.

From what I gather children taking this overly politically correct health course require written permission from their parents before they can have this pro-gay crap crammed down their throats, surely you wont have any problem if some parents refuse to allow it to be taught to their children.

I will be interested to see what percentage of parents really do share your extreme views.

I bet this is not the first time you have had to explain to people you are not a member of the "left", I wonder why they would get that impression anyway.

I hear you like to delete comments here if they are in opposition to your views, my experience with blogs that allow comments has proven that attitude to be counter-productive, and only encourages uncivil discourse.

Then if thats the case, I totally agree with you, that the world has bigger problems to deal with than sexy cheerleading.

And that this is just another example of the Righteous Right trying to purify our society of everything that makes America great. They seek to deny the non-religious fanatics intellectual freedom and the ability to enjoy life's pleasures in our schools and in our homes.

You had me up till the Cucumber. We seemed to have mastered the ability to properly install a Trojan without guidance from our teachers or parents. Its pretty hard to put one on the wrong way at any rate. Its kind of an instinctive thing that don't require much formal instruction and I don't think demonstrating the procedure serves any valid purpose in a public school curriculum beside giving its supporters the satisfaction of knowing the are forcing their will on those who are less liberally enlightened.

You would think a high quality Blog with an invisible stat-counter like this would have an RSS feed so all us concerned Montgomery County parents can keep up with developments on this issue better here and at Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum's equally biased site.

It turns out not to be so easy to puton a condom -- there are lotsof wrong ways to do it, and the failure rate is quite high when you do it wrong, and quite low if you do it right. There is a video that takes 7 minutes out of a kid's life to show them the right way to do it -- don't open the package with your teeth; if you start to put it on inside out, throw it away; use rubber not lambskin; leave some air in the tip. Lots of stuff. Definitely not "instinctive."

As far as RSS, we just haven't figured out how to do that from a non/Blogspot location.

Does it teach them how to do it fast,in the dark, while inebriated?

I mean come on, if you want to get realistic lets prepare them for some real world scenarios.

I think you, and any "study" you may cite attempts to over-complicate and institutionalize a simple stroking maneuver that most of this video's male target audience already has a good instinctive feel for.

I think having sex by the book, or video in this case will lessen the appeal of installing it correctly, and just be something else to rebel against.

And if you really want to be honest with these kids you will tell them how much better it feels to leave the rubber in their wallets and only solicit sex from clean women on birth control.

I hear what your trying to say Jim, and I realize the validity of your arguments, I just also realize that kids have had unprotected sex since the stone age, and have taught themselves how to serviceably install a prophylactic for generations now. And that to force some parents to have to go through the process of manually opting their children out of this lesson in proper fornication techniques is as wrong as teaching creationism in a science class.

The whole subject matter is not appropriate in a public school classroom setting to most parents, and to pursue its inclusion with such zeal smacks of liberal activism that shows no respect for the opposition's preference for the parenting techniques of their choice. I just think it tantamount to forcing your ideology on the entire community against most of our wills, and thats just as wrong when perpetrated by a liberal as it is when a conservative does it.

Montgomery County is a liberal county, a Blue county. The Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt this curriculum, which doesn't do much more than say that certain things exist. The condom instruction has been part of the curriculum for many years, and nobody's complained, it's just a new video. The old video was actually was actually more graphic.

People here do want this stuff in their schools, it's just a tiny minority who are tyring to stop it. "Most parents" here approve of it this.

But Dear Doctor, you have it wrong. No parent must "go through the process of manually opting their children out of this lesson in proper fornication techniques." First, there is no lesson in any "fornication techniques." There are only lessons in proper condom handling, storing, applying, and removing --all done in seven minutes while stressing abstinence ten times. Second, every parent who wishes his or her child learn these lessons must affirmatively consent, i. e., opt IN, otherwise, the child will get an alternative lesson. Let's stick to the facts, please and thank you.

Thanks for clarifying that for me cillygoose, I am just starting to gather information on this subject, tell me, when do we get to see what percentage of parents voluntarily elected to opt their child into this repulsive program?

Will the opt-in ratio be published?

I am really interested to see if "most parents" are really on board with this video being shown to their children.

Do you know exactly how the permission form is worded?

Is the permission form as explicit as the video?

"Protect Yourself" was field-tested in 3 MCPS high schools during the Spring semester of 2004. A total of 189 high school health education students participated in the field-test and received instruction on condom use and viewed the video, "Protect Yourself." Of all the high school health education classes participating in the field-test, only one student opted out. That makes opt-in the ratio 189:1.

The video was approved and is now part of the health curriculum. It will be used for the first time in all MCPS high schools this semester. I'm sure a new permission slip has been written and expect to receive a copy of it at the health education parent meeting on April 6, 2005.

If you ask me nicely, I might be willing to type it up for you.
