Another Board Member Leaving?

The Washington Post had this little statement tucked into a summary of county education-news-that-doesn't-quite-make-the-news:
An Ervin Run for Council?

County Council President George L. Leventhal told staff members at an annual picnic last week that his top aide, Valerie Ervin, plans to resign June 9. The announcement set off speculation that Ervin, a member of the school board, is preparing to run for the council seat being vacated by Tom Perez (D-Silver Spring), who is running for state attorney general.

Leventhal declined to comment on the chatter, saying, "When she's ready to discuss with the press her next step, she'll do that."

If Ervin, a resident of Silver Spring, decides to enter the race, she will join at least two others vying for the District 5 seat: Takoma Park City Council member Joy Austin-Lane and Silver Spring resident Hans Riemer , political director for the nonprofit Rock the Vote. Council to Increase Oversight of Schools

Valerie Ervin has always been supportive of inclusiveness in the sex-ed curriculum and has encouraged our efforts, but it sounds like she may be thinking of moving on. A lot's going to change in the next month, as people file for these county races. Clearly, this is just rumor at this point, but a credible one.

In other news ... I may have been wrong in assuming that Gabe Romero was no longer associated with that extremist group.

This Gazette article makes it sound a lot more definite that Valerie Ervin will leave the BOE and run for County Council.

Ms. Ervin may be leaving the BOE, but she will run for the District 5 County Council seat and she will most likely win. One function of the County Council is to determine the funding levels for MCPS.

Montgomery County's GLBT public school students will benefit from having a strong supporter of inclusiveness in the MCPS sex-ed program move up to the County Council level.
