Better Times for the CRC

The Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum are excited again. These are good times for them, they have a mission, a cause, something to get worked up about. Things are looking up.

They want you to know that if Montgomery County forbids discrimination on the basis of gender identity, men are going to start going into the ladies' room and peeking at ladies sitting on toilets. See, all they have to do is say they're transgender, and there's nothing you can do about it. Just say they feel like ladies, what can you do? If this bill passes, the entire moral structure of reality will be inverted, up will be down, bad will be good, and the CRC is going to make sure that doesn't happen.

They have an "alert" on their web site now that says:
PUBLIC NOTICE
The MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCIL
is set to pass a LAW which will allow
MALE USE of FEMALE RESTROOMS,
SHOWERS & DRESSING ROOMS

I think it would be fun to pass a law that says anybody can go into whichever bathroom they want. You'd still put "Men" and "Women" on the doors, but there would be no law to enforce which room you went into.

What do you suppose would happen?

My guess: nothing at all would happen.

The CRC assumes that the only reason men don't go into the ladies room is that it's against the law. Is that bizarre, or what? I don't go into the ladies room because, one, I think people deserve a little privacy, and two, I don't really want to see what's in there. And three, now that I think about it, I would fully expect, even if it wasn't against the law, that some lady's husband or boyfriend would want to adjust my attitude, possibly physically, if I went in peeking at his wife or girlfriend on the toilet.

But wait. There's more:
YES, it’s true. Males who self identify themselves as females will have open access to women’s and girls’ restrooms, locker rooms and showers if the Montgomery County Council doesn’t hear from you BEFORE November. 13th

“That’s nuts,” you say. Not to our Council, which is poised to pass the Nondiscrimination, Gender Identity Bill (Bill 23-07) into law on November 13th. Bill 23-07 describes “gender identity [as meaning] an individual’s actual or perceived gender….”

You can stop this! The vote on this bill is November 13th. Urge the Montgomery County Council to exclude entry into female restrooms, showers and dressing rooms by male transgenders and vice versa. The American Psychiatric Association recognizes Gender Identity Disorder as a mental illness.

The wording is a little different in their email newsletter, where the "That's nuts" line says "Not to our ultraliberal Council..."

That vice versa business. Are they saying that female restrooms, showers and dressing rooms are going to enter male transgenders? That's how I read it. How would that work?

And uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but I would think the problem would be female transgender people using the ladies room. I admit the terminology gets a little confusing, but I think it is appropriate to describe a person by the sex they present themselves as. Used to be a man, now you're a woman, you're female as far as the world is concerned.

And the mental illness thing, that's so dumb. If somebody suffers from Gender Identity Disorder, the therapy, if they qualify for it, may be to surgically change their sex. So what? Then they're cured, they don't have a "mental illness" any more. You know, they're just saying that because it sounds bad, not because it makes any sense.

The latest is that they are organizing a protest for tomorrow at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center, "because women's gym locker rooms should be safe -- no men in the women's dressing rooms and locker rooms!" I expect that certain media representatives will show up, to join in the pretense that there is a great controversy in Montgomery County over the possibility that a transgender person would need to use a public restroom.

A couple more tidbits from the newsletter that aren't on the website:
We need your help. The press is down playing this issue and the time is short. The bill will be voted on the 13th.

We will provide the flyers at the protest. If you can, make a poster and bring it with you. The focus is on not forcing women to share locker and dressing rooms with men. --- There are safety and privacy issues at stake.

If Bill 23-07 is passed by the Montgomery County Council, any male who merely claims he feels female will have full access to the most private female areas in any K-12 school, university, store (including changing rooms), church, synagogue, restaurant, theater, health club, and public swimming pool.

The bill will allow transgenders and cross-dressers open access to public bathrooms, dressing rooms and showers. And it forces girls and women to shut up about it or be subject to charges of harassment.

Whatever happened to common sense? Council member Duchy Trachtenberg calls our criticism “hyperbolic.” But, we won’t be cowed into silence.

Let me explain, in case you haven't been following this story. The County Council is discussing a bill that would make it illegal to discriminate against a person because of their gender identity. Transgender people are probably the most-discriminated-against group in the world, nobody understands them, people make fun of them, attack them physically, and really they're just people. They can do as good a job for you as the next person, enjoy a good meal just like you and me. The bill may or may not pass, I think the votes are there but you gotta play the game to see who wins. The CRC thinks they have identified a terrible problem. Of course they were looking for a problem, because they support discrimination against transgender people. And this terrible problem is ridiculous.

Well, they're happy again. They lost the fight over sex-ed, now they have something else to whine complain about. I don't really see what motivates them, but ... as long as they keep doing it, we'll keep making fun of them.

What an interesting comparison:

"...If somebody suffers from Gender Identity Disorder, the therapy, if they qualify for it, may be to surgically change their sex. So what? Then they're cured, they don't have a "mental illness" any more. You know, they're just saying that because it sounds bad, not because it makes any sense..."
--Jim K, 11-1-07

"...It was not my intention to offend anyone, I think however as a physician there is a certain amount of honesty. Gender identity disorder is a disorder, it is in the American Psychiatric Association as a mental illness. Would you support that as a position [perhaps "physician"] or will you be true to biology? Everyone has to make their own decision on that but I don't believe they should be forced..."
--Ruth Jacobs testimony before the Montgomery County Council, October, 2007

So Dr. Jacobs voiced concern about "honesty" on this issue and followed it up with a half truth. Dr. Jacobs knowingly stated GID is a disease and dishonestly failed to point out that the remedy for some folks with GID is gender transition with hormones and surgery. Is the intended implication of her half truth -- that transgenders are ill -- honest? No, it's not. If she were expert in this area (she's not, GID is not an infectious disease), she'd know that GID sufferers must live as the gender they feel they are for a long time and pass several therapeutic milestones before surgery will ever take place. She'd also know that once a person has had the surgery, they are cured and no longer ill with GID.

I hope the fact that the CRC's medical doctor representative publicly displays such dishonesty will cause MCPS to reevaluate her qualifications to serve on the Citizen's Advisory Committee. We don't need dishonest people more interested in spin and half truths than honesty serving the Montgomery County community.

The Gay-Straight Alliance at my school has also been advocating for equal rights of transgender persons by writing letters to the City Council stating they SHOULD pass this measure. At my school we have two transgender students and the MAJORITY of students, parents and teachers agree that these students need a law making it illegal to discriminate against them. I wish these CRC/PFOX freaks could see what these students must face everyday of their lives. They already have school and college to worry about, but how can they receive a fair education if where they go to school is a place that does not welcome them (telling them they are wrong???). Being in that situation, as I am myself gay and a teacher, when I was a student in middle and high school, I know what it's like to go to school fearing that I will be called names or physically harassed by other students. That was not fair and I should not have gone through that...and by NO means will I let any student: gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, black, white, yellow, etc experience that fear, hate and depression through which I went while I am the adult in charge. Kids are our richest resource and we need to make sure that ALL OF THEM are well taken care of, both physically as well as mentally. Shame on PFOX and CRC. It makes me physically sick that they are forcing kids to go through what I personally did. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

Once again, the CRC-PFOX-Family Leader people show us how creepy they really are. It wasn't enough for them to make it clear that they are fixated on the private intimate behavior of their married neighbors, but now they're telling us that they spend too much time thinking about the bodies of the other people using public restrooms.

Think, people. Bathroom access laws have been on the books for years in other jurisdictions, and none of those jurisdictions have had people cross-dressing for the purpose of going into opposite-sex bathrooms to ogle or assault anyone. This is a totally made-up issue.

Everyone I know who uses public toilets seeks privacy and offers it to others. Who cares about the condition of the body of the person behind the latched door? Do they really need to imagine this? Couldn't they read a novel or something? Maybe join a garden club? Flowers do sex out in the open!

If we really want to deal with an ongoing privacy issue in public restrooms, let's pass a law requiring that women keep their cellphone conversations to themselves when using public toilets.

"Shame on PFOX and CRC. It makes me physically sick that they are forcing kids to go through what I personally did."

You guys are just ridiculous. CRC is not in favor of passing a law requiring businesses to allow people to use whatever gender bathroom they feel like. That's not forcing anyone to do anything. Quite the opposite. If a restauranteur wants to maintain unisex restrooms, he is currently free to do so and would continue to be so if the county follows CRC's advice and votes down this new law. The party forced to do something would be the restauranteur that preferred to maintain sex-segregated restrooms.

It's not hard to see that this law could lead to all kinds of abuse with wasteful lawsuits from Wavy Gravy and Mother Earth types taking a stand against bigotry and intolerance but maybe Jim's right- maybe the law would really have no effect at all. If so, however, why the spectacle of TTFers frothing around acting like not passing it would be cataclysmic event?

As for the kids this teacher is always bringing up, have them act their gender at school and tell them to wait until they are old enough to make a decision to participate in a radical lifestyle. If they've already been so vocal at their present school that they feel socially or physically threatened, have them transfer to a safer school and tell them to be discreet.

And while you’re busy sanctioning the harassment of your students Mr. Teacherman, you may also want to take the advice of Dr. Ruth Jacobs when she quotes:

“Dr. Zucker tries to “help these kids be more content in their biological gender” until they are older and can determine their sexual identity — accomplished, he said, by encouraging same-sex friendships and activities like board games that move beyond strict gender roles.”

There you have it ladies and gentlemen, according to the CRC, the cure for transgenderism is to play Candyland.

Those who are "frothing around" would be the fearmongers who are acting like passing this nondiscrimination law would be "cataclysmic event." They are the ones who are holding a DEMONstration in support of continued discrimination against people. They are protesting this new law because they like to discriminate against people who are not exactly like them. They think "tolerance" and "acceptance" are dirty words.

Don't be absurd, it would be forcing transgendered individuals to risk their safety and lives in men's bathrooms. A lot of men are violently homophobic and a transexual in a men's bathroom is inviting assault. You're attempting to force transexuals to use the bathroom that doesn't fit with their innate gender and risk physical assault or worse.

Before I transitioned to female I continued to use male bathrooms until I started noticing the double-takes I was getting due to my feminine appearance. At that time I decided I had better start using the ladies room as there was little doubt in my mind that at some point some homophobe like the anonymii was going to assault me eventually.

The idea that perverts are going to falsely claim to be transgendered to peep at women in the ladies room is unfounded. Transexuals must see a psychiatrist to be eligable for surgery and are given a letter stating that they are a pre-op transexual taking on a female personae and using the ladies room. A legitimate pre-op transexual can verify their right and need to be in the ladies room, a peeping-tom cannot.

Anonymous said "It's not hard to see that this law could lead to all kinds of abuse with wasteful lawsuits".

The reddest of red herrings. With transexuals being a tiny percentage of the population there's no way this can lead to a "wave" of lawsuits - that's just absurd. The judicial system is easily capable of handling the rare lawsuit that might be necessary to ensure justice in this matter.

Anonymous said "As for the kids this teacher is always bringing up, have them act their gender at school and tell them to wait until they are old enough to make a decision to participate in a radical lifestyle.".

It doesn't matter what age a child is they are old enough to decide what gender role they feel is most appropriate for them. Under no circumstances should we be crushing children's spirits by forcing them into rigid gender roles that may not fit them. No child should have to wait "until they're old enough" to be themselves just to please bigots. Anonymous, put yourself in someone else's shoes for a change and ask yourself how you'd feel about being asked to dress and act in a way that is the exact opposite of how you feel inside. A boy in a dress hurts no one and a responsible society lets a child make this choice whenever he/she feels like it.

Anonymous said "If they've already been so vocal at their present school that they feel socially or physically threatened, have them transfer to a safer school and tell them to be discreet."

Absolutely not! You don't punish the victim and reward the victimizers! A transgendered child is doing nothing wrong, the ones making the threats are the criminals and need to be dealt with. We need to make all schools safe for transgendered kids, not just shuffle them around hoping that somehow somewhere one of these schools will be safe when we've done nothing to bring that about. What you're suggesting is the equivalent of telling a black child who's been harrassed they have to transfer to another school and had better not "act so black".

The problem is society and not transgendered kids and it is society that must be corrected, not the innocent victims of bigotry.

"Don't be absurd, it would be forcing transgendered individuals to risk their safety and lives in men's bathrooms."

Don't be absurd. No one is forced to use any particular bathroom. The county is chockful of eating establishments and gas stations where the patrons use the restrooms one at a time with the door locked.

"A lot of men are violently homophobic and a transexual in a men's bathroom is inviting assault."

A lot of men? Come off it. Maybe in Saskatchewan. This is Montgomery County.

"Before I transitioned to female I continued to use male bathrooms until I started noticing the double-takes I was getting due to my feminine appearance. At that time I decided I had better start using the ladies room as there was little doubt in my mind that at some point some homophobe like the anonymii was going to assault me eventually."

And how did the women treat you? I think it's sexist to think only men are violent.

"The idea that perverts are going to falsely claim to be transgendered to peep at women in the ladies room is unfounded."

This is Montgomery County. We tolerate perverts so we have a lot of them.

"Transexuals must see a psychiatrist to be eligable for surgery and are given a letter stating that they are a pre-op transexual taking on a female personae and using the ladies room. A legitimate pre-op transexual can verify their right and need to be in the ladies room, a peeping-tom cannot."

And who do they show that letter to? The ladies in the next stall? Their fathers, husbands and boyfriends?

Is this letter thing part of the MC bill?

"The reddest of red herrings. With transexuals being a tiny percentage of the population there's no way this can lead to a "wave" of lawsuits - that's just absurd. The judicial system is easily capable of handling the rare lawsuit that might be necessary to ensure justice in this matter."

Ah, justice, as in the freedom to use any restroom I please. This is Montgomery County. You wouldn't believe how many lawyers we've got. And they're all looking for business.

"It doesn't matter what age a child is they are old enough to decide what gender role they feel is most appropriate for them. Under no circumstances should we be crushing children's spirits by forcing them into rigid gender roles that may not fit them."

Actually, it's probably in he child's best interest to force them to act their gender in all circumstances.

"No child should have to wait "until they're old enough" to be themselves just to please bigots. They may be hurting themselves. This is a mental illness. Could be seen as a form of masochism. If adults want to get into that, it's their business but children need guidance. A responsible society provides it.

Regarding violently homophobic men anonymous said "A lot of men? Come off it. Maybe in Saskatchewan. This is Montgomery County.".

The GLSEN school climate survey proves that there are many violently homophobic men throught the U.S. The fact that you're there proves my point - Montgomery County isn't significantly different than Saskatchewan, in fact, people in Saskatchewan are probably more tolerant of gays, that's certainly true of the Canada versus the U.S. in general. Don't forget that this is the country that chose to make gays equal with relatively little fuss. And the sky didn't fall either.

Anonymous said "And who do they show that letter to? The ladies in the next stall? Their fathers, husbands and boyfriends?".

The police of course, who else are you going to complain to if there's a man in the ladies room?

Anonymous said "I think it's sexist to think only men are violent.".

Yeah...right... That's why there's just as many female boxers as male boxers, that's why there's just as many female gangs as male gays, that's why there's just as many women in Ultimate Fighting Contests as men. Sure, we all see that.

There's a reason why 95% of all prison inmates are male. Violent women are rare, violence is overwhelmingly a male testosterone driven action. Only a fool or a liar would suggest there's even remotely any equivalence between male and female violence - which are you?

Anonymous said "This is Montgomery County. We tolerate perverts so we have a lot of them.".

Yeah...right...and you don't tolerate anti-gay attitudes so you don't have any violently homophobic males. Sure, I believe that...

Anonymous said "Actually, it's probably in he child's best interest to force them to act their gender in all circumstances.".

The major mental health associations all disagree with you. Its never in a child's best interest to force him or her to be something they're not. This leads to depression, suicidal ideation, a loss of self-esteem. A boy who feels better suited to the female role is not hurting anyone and its harmful to him to force him to be something he's not just to make bigots like you happy. If your life is so pathetic that you need others to live according to your whims its time you got some counseling.

Anonymous said "They may be hurting themselves. This is a mental illness. Could be seen as a form of masochism. If adults want to get into that, it's their business but children need guidance. A responsible society provides it.".

Nonsense a dress doesn't hurt a boy in anyway, bigots like you do however. Children need to be free to be who they are, there will be enough rules and restrictions on who they can and can't be once they are adults. When I was eight and my mother placed my first dress on me I never felt more normal and right, it was in the later years when I was forced to where the "male uniform" that I felt stressed and abused.

Its time you stopped making idiotic assumptions about that which you know nothing and started listening to the experts who've been there. Rigid gender roles can be as much a prison as any place with bars. Let those who feel comfortable with those roles assume them, and leave children to be who they innately are while protecting them from the bigots who would justify the harrassment to force them to be something they are not.

This is an advocacy group that will tend to produce statistics that support its agenda. They do tend to get violent with one another though.

Anyone else remember when a male pervert exposing himself to women and children went to jail? I am getting so tired of so-called public servants who refuse to serve the public and instead serve their own selfish social interests.
I would guess these clowns might change their minds about the time local businesses start closing when their women customers stop patronizing them. And I have to say that the first time a pedophile molests a little girl because these clowns gave him access to his victim, I’d want to see every one of them not only named in the lawsuit but on trial for aiding and abetting a child molestation.
Who elected these clowns to begin with and why aren’t they being recalled right now???

"How can people be so stupid? It boggles the mind. We need to protect our children from politicians like this. It is not right that 3% of the population can have this much power in our country. Call this group of deranged people, send letters and emails and don't let this ridiculously stupid precedent pass in Maryland."
"I would ask what is wrong with these people, but they're not the only ones in this country carrying out an insane agenda. Yet, this one seems especially bizarre. Why are these people still in office?" (Shades of CRC's unsupported and aborted recall efforts!!)
Non-resident observations about what is best for citizens of Montgomery County have absolutely no credibility. As for the continued ravings of the CRC folks - keep it up! The more you say the more people are turned off by your continuous miasma.

"Thanks, Jim, for posting the newest low reached by the CRC mouthpiece "Anonymous"."

Those blog quotes weren't from the usual anon.

Didn't read them myself so don't know if they have any points or not.

Oh that's perfect. Anonymous says anonymous is not anonymous.

Well I'm glad that's cleared up.

Andrea- not anon
Hey, all of the CRCclone anons are the same to me- in fact, maybe N.anon posts as "similarly N" anon and thinks it is someone else.

As for the moronic comments that N. anon treated us to- what idiot doesn't know how the county council got elected? Oh, right, the idiots who posted where N.anon belongs fulltime. It really fries these nutters that they really don't have the numbers they claim in MC. Another poster quotes a 3% number-these people were elected by a large % of MC(and the recall notion- a true CRCer there)- that is how they have "power"- maybe she needs some math skills so she won't homeschool her kids into stupidity too.

so what do you do if some random guy shows up in the girls locker at the high school, all dressed in drag? He goes over to sit by the locker and watches the girls take off their panties.

What do you do, call the cops? What are they gonna do? They're going to tell you "we can't do anything, she said she feels like a woman".

You know it's gonna happen, and happen a lot. There are lots of freaks in this town.
